Lead Legal Assistant (OA)

If selected for this position, you will join a well-respected team that is responsible for providing legal and litigative support to the Criminal Division of the Northern District of Indiana. The incumbent of this position serves as the Lead Legal Assistant responsible for assisting the Supervisory Legal Assistant by overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Legal Support Staff. Additionally, the incumbent serves as a Legal Assistant responsible for directly and independently supporting Assistant United States Attorneys (AUSAs) by providing a wide variety of technical assistance. The work requires a specialized knowledge of the processes, procedures, and legal assistant activities in conjunction with a knowledge of clerical and administrative office skills. The work also requires the ability to apply these skills to increase the effectiveness of the assigned AUSA and their caseload. Typical work assignments will include (but are not limited to):
Distributing and balancing the workload among employees in accordance with job assignments established by the supervisor. Instructs employees in specific tasks and job techniques and gives on-the-job training to employees. Assists in keeping employees informed of, explaining, justifying, and promoting the goals of the supervisor and management. Monitoring training needs of employees within the work unit, recommending types of training, and conducting training as needed. Reports to supervisor with regards to performance and training needs of employees, and conduct issues. Examining, preparing and processing a variety of technical legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, subpoenas, and libels. Providing assistance to attorneys in trial preparation. Assembling exhibits, affidavits, and other legal documents. Assembling and organizing files and records material for disposition or transfer to records depository. Maintaining calendar of assigned active cases. Tracking filing, hearing, and trials dates, and scheduling conferences and interviews. Arranging travel by preparing itinerary and securing transportation and hotel reservations. Producing a variety of written documents and materials using a wide range of office software applications. Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progresses. To qualify for this position, you must meet the requirements of the grade level as described below:
Specialized
Experience:
To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must possess at least one (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level. Specialized Experience is defined as experience performing a variety of technical legal work which demonstrates a practical knowledge of law, the litigation and judicial process, and applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Examples of specialized experiences may include the following:
examining, preparing and processing technical legal correspondence and documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in format; processing and organizing legal data and other supportive material; reviewing incoming material and independently determining the need for assembly and preparation of a variety of legal documents, e.g., complaints, motions, orders, answers, pleadings, and subpoenas; conducting factual and legal research in legal and non-legal databases; and managing paper and electronic documents and evidence, correspondence, briefs, witness interviews, and other documentary materials. Office Automation Proficiency:
You must be able to type at least 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors. (A typing test may later be required.) Time-In-Grade Requirement (if applicable):

The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
